Clergy Corner - May 2011

Foot-Ball in mouth

I don't read the football pages closely but one story caught my eye recently. England's manager, Fabio Capello is Italian, of course.

And he has come in for criticism for a poor command of English.

My Italian wouldn't stand up to scrutiny. Would yours? But we are not managing the national side for Italy, are we, nor paid £4.8 million a year!

In 'staunch defence of his management style and language skills' (according to the papers), Capello claimed he needs only 100 words of English to communicate with his players.

One newspaper suggested what the words are, beginning: Captain, telephone, super-injunction, adultery, nil, congratulations, Germany, goal-keeper, butterfingers…

It leads me to wonder what 100 words will encapsulate our parish.

Your ideas gratefully received, naturally.

How about these? Flower, Roads, Gary, Saints, Swaythling, parish, of, grace, mercy, peace, from, God, the Father and his Son, Jesus, Christ, Holy, Communion, Spirit, Alban, Mary, South, Stoneham, Highway, alleluia, worship, joyful, all, ages, weddings, baptism, care-rings, prayer, Bible, mission, coffee, Sheena, film, club, churchwardens, tower, bells, Vicarage, forgiven, community, room, partners. That's the first half. Second half: banns, welcome, international, church, council, Christian, Aid, collectors, funeral, hymns, hers, psalms, Palm, Sunday, rotas, choir, singing, ancient, modern, Townhill, Mansbridge, bereavement, support, schools, Grange, Court, reflection, churches, together, neighbours, covenant, family, king, children, for, all, organists, guitar, lectern, altar, bread, wine, love, charity, tolerance, Easter, Pentecost, victory, death, resurrection. Full-time whistle.

It helps sometimes to have only a post-card size to write on.

In the Lord's Prayer Jesus gives the supreme example of how to pray in 48 words. He sums up the Law and the Prophets in 75. Not bad for conciseness.

AMEN.
