Death to Life

By the time you get this Magazine, we shall be halfway thought Lent - Mothering Sunday, Lent 4, is also sometimes called Refreshment Sunday - you're allowed to have a little rest in the middle of Lent on that day!

Lent begins by reflecting on the forty days Jesus spent in the wilderness - this year the Gospel Reading was Matthew 4:1-11, a passage which helps us to reflect on Jesus' temptations, and the fact that he is shown by the gospel writers to be fully human, sharing in the same temptations which all of us have to face.

As Lent progresses our thoughts turn from the start of Jesus ministry to its completion - we reflect more deeply on the Passion of Christ.

On Palm Sunday, we hear the Passion Gospel, a long passage from St Matthew's Gospel, re-telling the story of Jesus' arrest, trial and crucifixion.

Through the worship in Holy Week, we are encouraged, in lots of different ways, to stand at the foot of the Cross, to enter more and more deeply into the Passion Narratives.

On Maundy Thursday, we have the opportunity to remind ourselves of the events at the Last Supper, and to have our feet washed, and to wash one another's feet - as Jesus commanded us to do.

On Good Friday, we reflect on the son of God, glorifies by being hung on the Cross, overcoming sin and death.

This year we shall have the added bonus of the Southampton Passion in the Guildhall Square, a re-enactment of the events of the first Good Friday, and an opportunity for those who may not come to Church to see what the Easter story is all about.

On Easter Eve, we will be able to see and hear the whole of St Mark's Gospel in the Mark Drama, at the Methodist Church - another event to invite friends and family to; and the will be followed by our renewal of Baptism Vows at the Easter Vigil.

And, finally, on Easter Day, we celebrate the glorious Resurrection of Jesus, the Christ, from the dead, and rejoice with the Church throughout the world in his victory over death, in his winning of life for us.

Make the most of this Lent, Holy Week and Easter, to renew your faith, to be refreshed, and to celebrate these crucial events of Christian history.
