For the Word of the Lord:
Thanks be to God

What will the Year of the Bible mean to us in Swaythling?

Actually, I don't know yet!

But, over the past few months, we have been exploring ways in which we might use the 400th anniversary of the King James Version of the Bible to help us to reflect more deeply on the Word of God as found in Scripture, and to allow it to become more and more a part of us - individually, and as a Church.

You'll be able to read more about 'Getting the Bible Habit' & 'Reading the Bible afresh' further on in this edition of Highway.

One of the things we have been considering is Biblefresh - an initiative from a number of organisations, including the Bible Society, to help the church as a whole:

To read the Bible - both in church and in our daily lives:

To be trained in handling the Bible well - that means to feel increasingly confident in using the Bible, in understanding how it hangs together, in being more aware of the different types of literature in the Bible, and of how God speaks to us through them.

To support Bible translation - we have had the Bible in English for over 400 years, but there are still over 200 million people without the scriptures in the own language, and 2393 language groups yet to have their own Bible.

To experience the Bible in new and creative ways - to engage with Scripture in through different media, such as art, film, theatre, poetry, and so on.

We have a tremendous opportunity to concentrate on the Bible this year - in Church, in Bible Study and House Groups, through Daily Bible Reading Notes, and through special events.

Let's seize the opportunity as we begin this New Year. And may the Word of God dwell in us richly and bless us as we begin 2011.
