In 2008, a white-crowned sparrow, usually only found in the USA, landed in a garden in Cley-next-the-Sea in Norfolk.
It stayed around for ten weeks, and became the subject of intense interest as birdwatchers, twitchers, and others who were just curious, descended in their hundreds to see this unusual visitor.
The owner of the garden put a bucket by the gate, and invited donations for St Margaret’s, the local church.
£6000 was donated, and the money used to renovate the church’s large plain glass west window.
To commemorate the part played by the little bird, a panel designed by a local artist, depicting the sparrow was incorporated in a corner of the window.
If we find an unusual bird in the churchyard at St Mary’s, we’ll know what to do…..
