Booking a Wedding in the Parish of Swaythling, Southampton

Weddings are conducted at St Mary's, South Stoneham and St Alban's, Burgess Road.

They are usually on Saturdays, but other days are sometimes possible by arrangement.

By law, to be married in a Church of England Parish, either one or both parties (bride and/or groom)

  • must have an address in the Parish of Swaythling.
  • or be on the electoral roll of the Parish (i.e. be a regular worshipper)
  • or have a Special Licence from the Archbishop of Canterbury (granted in exceptional circumstances, and only when neither party has been married before).

If one or both parties have been married before special arrangements apply:

  • You will need to meet with one of the clergy to talk about what has happened in the past, and why it is you want to be married in Church. We then consider each case in consultation with the Diocesan Bishop.

Readings, Prayers and Hymns for Weddings in the Parish of Swaythling

We would like your wedding to reflect your own thoughts and hopes as much as possible.

Each couple is unique, and the words used in the Service should reflect that.

Please choose one or two readings - and think about who might read them for you. There are 40 suggestions, but there are also lots of other readings you might like to think about.

Some Prayers

See the suggestions in the prayer section

Two or Three Hymns

Again, suggestions are given here to help you, but there are lots of other hymns as well.
