| Traidcraft: What an ‘Extraordinary’ A G M
|
Although I have never been to any Company AGM before, I am sure this was one with a difference. For instance, we started with a 30 minute act of Christian Worship and our prayers were asked for a seriously ill Director! !
What followed was a business meeting in format (reports, accounts, elections etc.) but all with a bias to what we can do FOR THE POOR of the world rather than how much profit can we allocate to ourselves. The question and answer session included "Why support Traidcraft rather than our local supermarket when they both sell fairly traded goods?".
The answer is, the supermarket is using its profits from the sales to the benefit of its shareholders where Traidcraft is using it to develop more opportunities for poor producers. Lunchtime was spent mingling with the Directors and asking questions/seeking advice.
I left at the end of the day even further convinced that Fair Trade is a requirement for me as a Christian and that the way we shop really can make a difference.
