This may seem like a funny question to ask - especially if you are feeling quite well.
If you haven’t, you might like to consider it. I keep a file of funeral requests here at the Vicarage.
Why should I plan my funeral?
Mainly, because it is a tremendous help to your loved ones after you have died (which may not be for a long time, God willing, but we never know). When the Clergy do funeral visits, we often discover what a comfort it is for the family or friends arranging the funeral to know that they are doing ‘the right thing’.
Do you want to be cremated or buried?
Service in Church first?
Funeral Eucharist?
Sherry afterwards (as was specified in a recent instruction for a funeral in the parish.
Have you got
particular hymns or readings you would like?
Is there someone in particular you might like to be involved in leading or taking part in the service.
All these questions you could quite easily settle, either by writing them down or (which is even better) discussing them with your loved ones, and giving them a copy of your instructions. The clergy are also happy to discuss arrangements, and I am happy to keep copies here at the Vicarage - which, of course, you can update at any time.
In this Resurrection Season of Easter, why not look forward to the excitement of the life after death which Christ has won for us on the Cross, and plan the funeral service to celebrate that crossing, and to mourn your departure from this life.
And, by the way, please make a will!
You can save no end of trouble for your relatives if you do. It only has to be very simple - but it can save a lot of trouble later.
