Preaching Sermons and Listening to Them!

Gary is preaching at Highfield Church at the beginning of next month. As part of the preparation he was sent the following suggestions for preachers and listeners. Quite thought provoking - what do you think?

Manifesto for speakers…

As a speaker I commit myself to...

  • take time for regular and conscientious personal Bible study
  • set aside my own agenda
  • learn to listen for, and hear, God’s word
  • make time for prayerful and thorough preparation
  • seek to stay Biblical,
  • use illustrations and creative presentation styles to enhance the message not detract from it
  • desire to facilitate growth and transformation
  • deliver God’s word with humility and confidence
  • be clear and concise
  • present challenges honestly, but in a loving, non-manipulative way
  • summarise contemporary applications from the message

…and listeners

As a listener I commit myself to…

  • read the bible passage prayerfully before the service, whenever possible
  • come with an attitude of expectancy to hear from God
  • set aside personal concerns and distractions
  • pray for the speaker to be able bring God’s message clearly
  • ask God to speak not only to me personally but also to us as a congregation
  • ask God for help in maintaining own concentration
  • refuse to be put off by unfamiliar styles or different presentations
  • take notes if that is helpful for me
  • express appreciation to the speaker afterwards
  • give any ‘helpful comments’ only after prayerful consideration
  • reflect throughout the week on what I have heard and learned
  • feedback any further encouragements to the speaker
